The director of a small construction company, Tom, was used to dealing with all sorts of problems on the job site. From equipment malfunctions to scheduling conflicts, he had seen it all. But one day, he encountered a situation that was a little more unusual.
Two of Tom's employees, Frank and Jerry, had been working on a project together for several days. They had always been friendly with each other, but for some reason, they had gotten into a heated argument that day. Tom had been working in his office when he heard shouting and yelling coming from the job site. He quickly went to investigate.
When Tom arrived, he found Frank and Jerry standing face to face, their noses almost touching. They were both red-faced and shouting at the top of their lungs. Tom knew he had to act quickly to defuse the situation.
"Hey, what's going on here?" Tom asked, trying to sound calm and authoritative.
Frank and Jerry both began talking at once, each one trying to explain why the other was wrong. Tom held up his hand to stop them.
"Okay, let's take a step back here," he said. "What seems to be the problem?"
Frank and Jerry both started talking again, and Tom struggled to keep up with the conversation. They were arguing about who had made a mistake on the project, and each one was blaming the other.
Tom tried to mediate, but it seemed like the argument was only getting worse. Finally, he had an idea.
"Okay, let's settle this with a game of rock-paper-scissors," Tom suggested.
Frank and Jerry both looked at him incredulously. "What?" Jerry asked.
"Rock-paper-scissors," Tom repeated. "It's a simple game. You each make a fist, and then on the count of three, you either throw out rock, paper, or scissors. Rock beats scissors, scissors beats paper, and paper beats rock. Got it?"
Frank and Jerry nodded reluctantly. They each made a fist and waited for Tom's signal.
"Okay, one...two...three!" Tom shouted.
Frank threw out paper, and Jerry threw out scissors. Frank groaned in frustration.
"Okay, best out of three," Tom said.
They played another round, and Jerry won again. Frank was looking dejected, but Tom insisted they play one more round.
On the final round, Frank threw out rock, and Jerry threw out paper. Frank pumped his fist in the air, triumphant.
Tom couldn't help but chuckle at the absurdity of the situation. "Well, there you have it. The winner is Frank, and we can all get back to work now," he said.
Frank and Jerry looked at each other, then burst out laughing. They shook hands and went back to work, their argument forgotten.
From that day on, whenever there was a disagreement on the job site, Tom suggested settling it with a game of rock-paper-scissors. It became a running joke among the crew, but it seemed to work. No argument was too big to be solved by a simple game of chance.
And as for Frank and Jerry, they remained friends and coworkers, and they never let a silly argument get in the way of their work again.
The end.
